Game Recap:
Naperville North Huskies scored a 3-1 win over Benet Academy Redwings on Saturday in the final round of bracket play in the Best of the West Tournament. Coach Jim Konrad’s Huskies will advance to the championship game.
The Huskies return eight starters from last year’s Class 3A Final Four team. Junior Joe Sullivan got things rolling for the team with 17 minutes and 40 seconds remaining in the first half, with a well placed chip shot over charging Benet goalie, Kyle Dal Santo.
Benet senior Hunter Miller tied the game with 34:44 minutes remaining in the second half with a nice play down the middle, working the ball past several defenders and drilling the ball to the left post. Miller followed up five minutes later with another impressive run and a hard shot that just missed left. Junior Alex Senak registered the other shot on goal by Benet.
The Huskies scored again on a restart with 20:40 remaining in the second half. The goal was scored by senior Lee Grander off a scramble three yards out on the right post.
The Redwings responded with an offensive surge in hopes of tying the game. The Huskies were able to capitalize on this strategy with a nice through pass to senior Evan Trychta. Trychta maneuvered the ball past two defenders with 11 minutes remaining in the game to provide the insurance goal the Huskies needed. Trychta was able to contribute immediately despite his recent return from a foot injury received this summer. The Huskies registered 6 shots on goal for the game and senior goalkeeper, Kevin Anderson had two saves.
Redwings showed improved possession of the ball, but the Huskies showed equal control in addition to playing a great first touch on the ball consistently throughout the game. The Huskies also played a stingy defense, limiting Benet's scoring opportunities.
“We showed improvement and came back from a 0-1 deficit, which we have not done all season,” stated Benet Coach Sean Wesley. “From that point forward, we were playing to win, not to tie. It was unfortunate that we let one in on the reset.”
Benet (2-3) will face Peoria Notre Dame on Friday at 4:30 at Hinsdale Central. Naperville North (3-1-1) will face Carl Sandburg in the Best of the West Championship this evening.

Game Recap:
The Benet Academy Redwings (2-3) earned a 1-0 victory on Friday evening against Peoria Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 2010 Class 2A Soccer Champions. Benet has struggled against some tough early competition, but their new offensive game was in top form this evening.
Peoria (3-1) has established a reputation as one of the state’s best soccer programs. With just four returning starters this year, they have high expectations for their varsity squad comprised mostly of juniors.  While the first ten minutes of play were controlled by Peoria, Benet emerged with more energy and confidence as the first half came to a close.
According to Benet Coach Sean Wesley, "The team has appeared hot and cold in past weeks.  Peoria Notre Dame is a fantastic team and they played extremely well the first ten minutes of play." Wesley added, "Senior Hunter Miller proved to be just too dangerous. He was great at bringing the ball up, holding the ball and allowing the offense the time they needed to set up."
Miller eventually scored the Redwings lone goal with 12:39 remaining in the second half after a long ball played by junior keeper Kyle Dal Santo was flicked off to Miller by junior Joey Chiariello.
Dal Santo also had a nice save early in the second half, managing to get a few fingertips on a hard shot, deflecting the ball into the crossbar. Dal Santo had three saves for the game.  Peoria Notre Dame keeper Mitch Auer had four saves.

Kucera had the assist.
"The team played very well. We started the game extremely strong and played one of the better stretches of soccer we've played this year," said Benet varsity coach Sean Wesley.  "There were many great combinations and connections. The goal by Nemetz was one of the best goals we've had this year."
Benet registered fourteen shots on goal for the game while Notre Dame had six shots. Benet keeper, Thomas Sullivan (Sr),  played goal for Benet in the second half and had all six saves. Notre Dame had eleven saves.

"Thomas Sullivan did a great job in goal the second half," commented Wesley. "He had a lot of big saves and didn't give up any rebounds.  Jon Markert, another senior, played the best I've ever seen him play.  And junior Alex Senak is another player just getting into stride here with us. Game Recap:

The Benet Academy Redwings had luck on their side Monday as they celebrated a 2-1 victory over the West Chicago Wildcats.  The decisive goal was scored by Benet senior Brendon Gesior with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game. Gesior launched a nice long ball from midfield intended for the forwards, that one hopped over the charging West Chicago keeper who had lost his footing.
The Wildcats dominated in the first half with their well established high pressure game. Offensively they dominated and played very well back-and-forth through the middle.  The first goal of the game was scored just ten minutes into the game by West Chicago junior Jesus Duran. Duran was able to outmaneuver the Benet defense on the left and executed a nice pullback move in the box and finished with a shot to the upper right.
Benet, however, gained significant momentum in the second half after some offensive adjustments.
"They beat us in the first half and the score reflected that play," Benet coach Sean Wesley said. "In the second half we played much better, created chances, and put pressure on their defense. We started dictating play, pressuring higher up the field as a unit, and we looked better."
Benet's consistent pressure in the second half paid off.  With 23:42 minutes remaining in the game, senior Benjamin Kucera scored on a header set into motion with a corner kick by senior Hunter Miller. The game remained a tie until the last two minutes of play, when senior Brendan Gesior scored giving the Redwings the lead.
Coach Wesley also gave credit to midfielder Joey Chiariello who was a huge help in the midfield tonight, along with Miller and Kucera.
The Benet coaching staff was also impressed with the contributions of junior goalkeeper, Kyle Dal Santo, who had three saves.
"He had his best game to date," added Wesley.  "In addition to saving the ball, he provided real leadership on the field. He was also able to step off the line and provide several value added touches throughout the game."
The Redwings, now 6-3-1 (2-0 ESCC), will play Joliet Catholic at home on Saturday, September 24th at 12:00 pm.

Game Recap:

The Benet Academy Redwings tied the Downers Grove South Mustangs 1-1 on Thursday afternoon in Downers Grove.  While Benet Academy created more scoring opportunities (17-6) and had more shots on goal (8-3), it was the Redwing squad that was lucky to call it a draw.

Benet Academy, hot off a recent ten game winning streak, had difficulty penetrating the Mustang defense all game long. While the Redwings (13-3-2) were able to lead the game with shots on goal, the quality of those shots was not there.  And with 3:06 minutes remaining in the first half, Downers Grove had their first shot on the Benet goal. The Mustangs converted on a corner kick from the right side that the Benet defense allowed to pass the goal face. Downer's Grove scored on a perfect header placed just inside the left post.

The second half was marked by scrappy play from both camps and it appeared that the Mustangs would have the win.  But it was junior Alex Senak of Glen Ellyn, that extended Benet's unbeaten streak to 13 games by scoring the equalizer with just five minutes remaining in the game. Senak managed to unload on a deflected shot from about 25 yards out on the right.  It was Senak's follow-up shot that was mishandled by the goalie and found the back of the net to give Benet the 1-1 tie.

“We have a big game tomorrow and this was a good wake-up call for our players,” said Benet coach Sean Wesley. “Credit still goes to the Downers Grove South players. They kept pressuring the ball up and down the field and played solid defense whenever we were close to their goal.”

Benet will face St. Viator at 4:30 on Friday at Celtic Park in Palatine.  The Redwings are now 7-0 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference and are guaranteed a first place finish. A win over long standing rival St. Viator will ensure that the title belongs to Benet alone rather than a shared title with both Viator and Carmel.
